Contrary to popular belief, some quizzes can be fun. And I made a super-simple one so you can find out what Dumb Ways To Die character you are.

Here is the quiz.

Everyone Has A Story: How To Write For The Total Beginner

This series is for everyone. If you have never sat down at a computer or with a notebook and pen to write a story, this series is for you. If you’re a highly acclaimed author who has many bestsellers and will never have to lift a finger again except to dig yourself out of the huge pile of money you made, thank you for visiting my blog, please leave a comment. (Actually, if all of you could leave comments, that would be great.) If you’re anyone in between, this series is for you. Welcome.

What is this series? You may ask. This is another How to Write series, where I’m going to start at the very beginning and work my way through the writing process. Hopefully, even if you’re not a total beginner when it comes to writing, you’ll give it a read and maybe a like. Support is always appreciated. Besides, you might learn something.

Everyone has a story. Whether it’s your life’s story, a fairy tale, a sci-fi novel or anything else, you have a story somewhere in your brain. The thing with your story is, you can’t force it out. You’ve just got to meander down that road until you find it. I believe everyone in the world could write down a fantastic story, if given the chance and the inclination. If you’re still reading this, you’re probably interested. And that’s great.

What’s so great about writing? If all you’ve ever written is for school or work, you’re missing out-big time. Writing is probably one of the best things in the world, right after sleep (and food.) When I sit down to write a story, a poem, fanfiction, whatever, I get to create a whole new world, with new characters and new adventures. I get to describe the fresh rain poring onto the hard desert earth. I get to figure out how a particular character is going to weasel her way out of a sticky situation that involves flamethrowers and guitars. I get to create a despicable villain who threatens her every step, confronts her at every turn. And then I get to share it with the world. I allow others into my land to feel the rain running down their arms. I let them think their way out of a flamethrower/guitar situation. And finally, I let them destroy the villain. They love it, I love it. Everyone wins.

So, how’s the series going to go? Well, first of all I’ll go over some basic stuff. Sentence structure and variation, repetition and how to avoid redundancy and more. After all that is through, I’ll move into the planning stage of the series. Why you shouldn’t start writing right away, how to know your character inside and out, and loads more. Finally, I’ll start the ‘how to write a story’ part, including articles of plot development and chapter divisions.

I’m really excited about this series, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading it.

Cheers!

I’m Totally Bored

gif not mine

I totally feel like this right now. Last minute cancellations are extremely frustrating/depressing, although I don’t blame the person. So here I am, feeling like John. So I hop on the computer. Nothing new on my favorite blogs, Chicken Smoothie is surprisingly quiet, I don’t feel like reading or drawing and my family is watching Twister, which is probably pretty interesting. I decided to take up origami due to a series of books. They were written for a younger

audience, but I don’t mind. I read a pretty good amount and variety. For example, my books-I-have-read list for this week (since Monday) reads as follows:

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, about 400 pages (1 day, Monday)

No Safety in Numbers by Dayna Lorentz, about 250 pages (.3 days overlapping between Monday and Tuesday)

The Kind of Friends We Used to Be by Frances O’Roark Dowell, about 230 pages (.3 days, Tuesday)

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger, about 140 pages (2 hours, Wednesday)

Darth Paper Strikes Back by Tom Angleberger, about 150 pages (.2 days, Wednesday and Thursday)

The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee by Tom Angleberger, about 190 pages (.2 days, Thursday and Friday)

TOTAL: about 1360 pages in five days. Not too shabby.

So that’s what I did. Yeah, I guess I’m a fast reader. I have a few more books lined up, it will be fun.

Cheers!

A Little Life Update

Not much going on with me. A little fangirling, a little cosplay plans, a little story idea, a little reading, you know.

And this is a pretty cupcake gif I found online that has nothing to do with my post but is very pretty. gif not mine.

Nothing really interesting. Let’s see…

I started a Benedict Cumberbatch fanclub on Chicken Smoothie.

I re-connected with an old friend, we’re going to do cosplays together.

I am planning my novel for either July or November, both NaNoWriMo months.

I’ve read the House of the Scorpion, No Safety in Numbers and The Strange Case of Origami Yoda.

I found this pretty gif online.

I have ordered a sonic screwdriver from thinkgeek.com. It should come by tomorrow. Super excited!

Oh, and just a little thing…

I START CELLO LESSONS TOMORROW!!!

But I’m not excited about this. At all.

Cheers!

Writing Variety: Roleplay

I don’t know whether or not you’ve ever heard of roleplaying, but you’re about to learn all about it!

In the type of roleplaying I do, you create a character, then, along  with other characters created by other people, you follow a loose storyline and create an unending story. This can be useful to your other writing in many ways.

1. Creating compelling characters. If you roleplay at any level that’s not complete beginner, you know that characters make your story. Unfortunately, I don’t have any examples I can post here, because the site I roleplay at (chickensmoothie.com) has a different text format for ‘pretty’ forms. (Pictures, colored text, formatting etc.) Here’s an unprettified basic form that beginners use.

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Personality:

History:

Family:

Looks (Picture or description):

Other:

One would then fill this out to explain their character to others. If you want to see one of my favorite forms for one of my favorite characters, go here. Character mine, no stealing! Obviously this is a hugely basic form for the level of roleplaying I want to achieve. My sister, who has more time for this, creates veritable novels and works of art for her forms.

2. Learning to write with restrictions. Many literate roleplays have a 300+ word count requirement for each post. Some roleplayers write up to 1K words a post. Writing one character, without powerplaying (making any of the other characters do anything) for that amount of time can sometimes be difficult. Meeting these word counts expands your imagination and stretch your abilities in ways they might not have been tested before.

3. It’s a fun new way to meet word count goals on a daily basis.

There you have it then! Three ways roleplaying can help improve your writing. If you’d like to try it, join chickensmoothie.com and look me up! My username is blogger.nerd. You can find my account here
